Paris Climate Agreement Enters into Force!

On 5th October 2016, the threshold for entry into force of the historic Paris Agreement was achieved - another great success for the international climate agreement that required two specific thresholds for its entry into force. Strong international support for the Paris Agreement demonstrated the urgency for action and emphasized the need for global cooperation to tackle the climate challenge. The Paris Agreement calls on countries to take immediate measures to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future. António Guterres to Become the Next UN Secretary General

On 13th October 2016, the General Assembly of the United Nations appointed by acclamation the former Prime Minister of Portugal, Mr. António Guterres. He will succeeed Ban Ki-moon, the 8th General Secretary General, when he steps down on 31st December 2016.[more]

Habitat III – UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development

A large majority of the world's population will live in urban centres by the end of this century. Currently, approximately 54% of people live in urban areas, a development which highlights the increasing importance of the Habitat III conference. The 2016 Habitat III Conference saw the adoption of the New Urban Agenda (NUA).[more]

SADC Validates Regional RE & EE Strategy and Action Plan

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States have refined and validated a regional Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (REEESAP) for the period 2016 to 2030, which aims to increase energy access and security, support industrialization, empower lives and enhance environmental sustainability. First International Agro-Industry Investment Forum Ethiopia

The first International Agro-Industry Investment Forum Ethiopia was held from 5-7 October 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event was organized by the Government of Ethiopia and UNIDO and featured over 1000 participants from the public and private sector, international organizations, industry associations, international investors as well as international financial institutions. High-Level Seminar on LLDCs

In the context of the Vienna Programme of Action, the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the High-Level Seminar on “Accelerating Sustainable Energy for All in Landlocked Developing Countries through Innovative Partnerships” was held in Vienna from 24th to 25th of October 2016. Participants of the high-level seminar stressed the importance of international cooperation and partnerships to address the specific challenges of LLDCs and accelerate universal access, renewable energy and energy efficiency development. SE4ALL’s Africa Hub Launches Green Mini-Grid Help Desk

Approximately 645 million Africans - nearly 60% of the population of Africa - do not have access to electricity. Mini-grids and off-grid sources will present important opportunities for providing electricity to this population in the future. In this regard, Sustainable Energy for All’s Africa Hub recently launched a Green Mini-Grid Help Desk (GMG Help Desk) to support project developers delivering renewable energy to rural areas through decentralised mini-grids. The GMG Help Desk provides online technical assistance on activites related to the business cycle of a mini-grid, tutorials on setting up mini-grid businesses and information on operation and maintenance. The portal also includes country-specific information and project developers can easily apply through the GMG Help Desk for support on their projects. Get connected here! [more]

ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Week

The ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Week recently took place from October 17th to 19th 2016 in Accra, Ghana. The event was organized by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) and the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP). The ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Week was organized to promote the exchange of ideas to support the acceleration of the implementation of a regional energy market, while improving the current landscape for a sustainable energy sector. The event was supported by the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), the Spanish Agency for international Development Cooperation (AECID), the European Union (EU), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). SDG Knowledge Hub Launched

The SDG Knowledge Hub, managed by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an online resource centre for news and commentary regarding the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the SDGs. The SDG Knowledge Hub was launched in September 2016 and brought together numerous knowledgebases related to climate change, natural resources, sustainable energy, among others. [more]

COP 22 Marrakech Climate Change Conference

The twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) and the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 12) was recently held in Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco from 7-18 November 2016. The UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech was the next crucial step towards implementing the provisions set out in the Paris Agreement last year. [more]
