Mexico International Renewable Energy Conference (MEXIREC)

The 7th International Renewable Energy Conference was co-organized by Mexican Secretariat of Energy (SENER), REN21, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), and was held in Mexico City from 11-13 September 2017, with attendees from 69 countries.

The conference reflected on the system approach to energy and acted as a common platform for governments, private sector and civil society leaders. Over the course of the three days, panelists attending the high level panels discussed the main challenges and areas of opportunity in the Caribbean and Latin-American region to promote the greater use of renewable energy sources.

One of the key outcomes of the conference was the adoption of a declaration on key elements to enhance the sustainable energy transition in Latin America and the Caribbean. It acknowledges the determining role energy efficiency and renewable energy play in achieving the targets set in the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, the participants called for improvement cooperation and collaboration between energy-related initiatives and organizations.

The conference also contributed to the strategy framework to promote the use of Cleaner Technologies and Fuels, strengthened the strategic dialogue with global stakeholders and leaders, and highlighted the synergies between small and middle sized enterprises. The parallel sessions that took place during the conference discussed the challenges of achieving a clean energy future in the context of renewable energy technologies and policies. Participants also had the opportunity to hear various perspectives on the adaptability of business models in marginal communities, social empowerment and the need for efficient regulations. Additionally, the importance of market flexibility in order to fully exploit the potential from maritime energy, heating and cooling technologies, hydropower and bioenergy was discussed. Panelists emphasized the need for regional approaches in order to empower local communities and achieve sustainable development. MEXIREC also held a series of side events that provided stakeholders with the opportunity to promote their work related to renewable energy. Ambassador Dr. Irene Giner-Reichl, President of GFSE, closed the event with the reading of the Conference Declaration.
