ECREEE: Burkina Faso - Towards the Adoption of a Gender Mainstreaming Policy in Energy Access

Furthermore, the energy situation can be characterized by deep rooted gender inequality. To bridge this gap and promote access to energy services for all, ECOWAS adopted an energy gender policy, which aims to guarantee gender equality in the energy sector through gender mainstreaming in energy policies and initiatives.

Burkina Faso launched the process of drawing up an action plan in October 2019, which aims to ensure equal access to energy resources and enable women to contribute to the decision-making process in the energy sector. The action plan also encourages women to take part in the energy trade even from a young age and thus increase women’s participation in the energy sector. Moreover, a gender-sensitive national budget was negotiated, in which parity must be the guiding principle.
