SEforALL: Acacia Innovations Provides Clean Cooking for Schools in Kenya

In Kenya, only 15% of the population has access to clean cooking facilities, this number is more than 2.6 billion people worldwide. Acacia Innovations distributes improved cookstoves and also manufactures and distributes non-carbonized briquettes made of sugarcane waste, called Kuni Safi (“clean firewood” in Swahili), that are distributed to schools and small businesses. Acacia Innovations became the largest supplier of cooking fuels in Kenya, providing over 175.000 children with a smoke-free learning environment and affordable school meals.

The briquettes are made from sugarcane fiber and recycled four cubic meters of agricultural waste, which conserves 25 trees (they save five tons of CO2 over their lifetime). Using these briquettes smoke is eliminated, which leads to a healthier environment. The company also supplies schools with energy-saving cookstoves. Acacia Innovations works with the Energy Access Booster Award to reach more schools and businesses.
